18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20 for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to.   We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. (Romans –23).

For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. Groaning is a thread woven through the middle of Romans 8. As we saw in last week’s reflections, creation groans as it awaits the new creation yet to come. We join the natural world in groaning because we too are caught in the suffering of this broken world. Romans includes one of the most surprising truths of Scripture.

The Groaning of Creation by Christopher Southgate, , available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide. The groans of creation, in a sense, are not just from degradation and destruction, but also of hope for us to reveal ourselves as true children of God. Creation is groaning for people to understand and embrace our divinely appointed role as stewards and caretakers of the earth (Genesis ).
